Discover the best of Istria — Croatia’s northernmost peninsula, famous for its spectacular scenery — during this 8-hour, small-group tour. Led by a local guide, you’ll visit four of the region’s historic, medieval-era towns: Motovun, Grožnjan, Oprtalj and Završje. Between the four, discover 13th-century ruins, views of the Motovun Forest, local galleries and artisan boutiques, and sites of Croatian cultural heritage. You’ll be transported between the four by comfortable, air-conditioned minivan, but will also do a fair amount of walking in each destination.
Setting off at 9am, and in the company of a small group, you’ll be led by a local guide to discover four of Istria’s most beautiful medieval towns. Transported by comfortable minivan, you’ll have the chance to admire Istria’s ruggedly beautiful scenery as you go — and will also do some exploring on foot at each of the four destinations.
Your first stop is the hilltop town of Motovun, which is famous for its Venetian colonial architecture. See its 13th-century fortification walls, which are still intact, and admire views over Učka Mountain and the Mirna River Valley.
Next, you’ll head to the town of Grožnjan, which is known as a local haven for artists and other creative types. Though it was nearly abandoned by the 1950s, this medieval town gained a new lease on life when painters, musicians, and other artists began to flock here. Today, you can wander its cobbled alleys and discover numerous galleries and art studios — and even pick up some unique souvenirs.
After that, it’s on to the town of Oprtalj, situated in the northwest of Istria. This lofty town is beloved of nature lovers, hikers, and truffle hunters. It’s also a favorite of cultured types, given that it’s filled with medieval- and Renaissance-era landmarks.
Finally, your last stop on this full-day tour is the lovely town of Završje, whose historic center is a Croatian cultural heritage site. Among its famous buildings are three historic churches, a castle, and a leaning bell tower. Završje is also on the Parenzana cycling route, one of the most beautiful bike paths in Croatia.
